4 Reasons Conventional Success Advice Won’t Work

Success means so many things for so many people and it possibly evokes strong reactions from different quarters, depending on how you relate to each of those people you are talking to. While success can be exhilarating for some people, it could be a tantalizing tease for some others. If you are still depending on conventional, this-is-from-the-classic-self-help-books advice, it’s time you understood why it won’t work for you:

• Your success isn’t my success: People are strikingly different. What success might mean to one person might not carry the same meaning for the other. If money and wealth creation could motivate someone, love and fame could be the motivating factor for another. How then could standard success advice dispensed through a motivational tape, self-help book or a motivational seminar suit everyone?
• Success is a moving target: Let’s assume that you are 25 years old and you are an ambitious person; you would have a fair idea as to what you want to achieve now. However, as years pass by, your idea of success might change. One of the reasons that happens is because of too many options available to you. Why take one route when there are more to take? Why go just south when you could go almost anywhere and still do what you want to do?
• The equation to success has more than just “you” in it: If achieving success was about rendering your services based on your competence and skills alone, it wouldn’t have been that hard to achieve it. Unfortunately, it isn’t just about you. No success is possible with just you in it. Success of any kind has involvement of others to some degree or the other. It isn’t enough to have technical skills to do a job well anymore; you got to know how to make people work for you or with you well.
• The Journey of thousand miles starts with a step and then something else: The road to success isn’t like adding up two numbers; it isn’t even close to pushing buttons to get what you want. There’s more to become successful than just taking action and getting started – although it’s a very important factor there. You got to start and stick with it. Meanwhile, you got to brandish all sorts of skills to survive in the game.
